European honeysuckle is native to Europe and north Africa, and has a scattered distribution in Maine, Nova Scotia, Ontario and the Pacific Northwest. It is a deciduous twining liana with smooth brown bark and thin stems that can grow up to 20 feet (7 m) long. Whitish-yellow flowers appear early in spring, giving rise to bright red berries.

'Honeybush' is a bushy, rounded to trailing, deciduous shrub with dark stems bearing oval to elliptic, dark green leaves turning reddish-purple and brown in autumn and, from midsummer into autumn, whorled clusters of dark crimson buds opening to fragrant, tubular, two-lipped, creamy-white flowers that age yellow.

From mid spring through late summer, abundant, large clusters of elongated, upright facing, soft-green buds open to creamy white trumpet-shape flowers that age to bright golden-yellow. The flowers are a beautiful contrast with the deep green foliage, which is evergreen in the southern range where it grows.

Flowers abundantly grow in racemes together, first, buds appear purplish red, opening to colors of soft cream, light yellow and then to lemon yellow, while emitting a delightful perfume. Red berries appear in the Fall.

Honeysuckle is definitely fragrant and that fragrance builds in intensity with warmer summer weather. This plant is hardy in zones 4-9, so if you fall within that spectrum this plant is considered a perennial and should regrow year after year with proper care.
