The Burdekin region is physically defined by the Burdekin River and the Haughton River catchments (Figure R2) and represents the water resource plan area of the Burdekin basin, as established by the Queensland Department of Natural Resources and Mines (DNRM).

Nestled in the delta of the Burdekin River, with its two popular townships of Ayr and Home Hill - linked by the iconically historic Burdekin Bridge - the Burdekin offers fantastic fishing, magnificent wetlands, beautiful birdlife and miles of unspoilt beaches to explore.

The lower Burdekin delta is a major irrigation area situated in the dry tropics on the northeast coast of Queensland. A series of very dry years in this region in the early 1960’s, and unprecedented pressures on the Burdekin delta groundwater systems led to commissioning of an artificial recharge scheme.

The Burdekin River is Queensland’s largest river, and its fertile delta is home to some of Australia’s most productive agricultural land. The river also provides valuable recreational opportunities for both residents and visitors.
