On searching through the Old Parish Records (OPR) of Baptisms (1706-1855), it is difficult to determine if the Burnfoot entry refer to the Carcow Burnfoot or the Blarene Burnfoot. On the North bank of the Esk river, four miles upstream from Langholm, lies the house and sheep farm of Burnfoot. In the 18th century it belonged to the Dukes of Buccleuch, as did (and still does) much of the land in Eskdale.

On the hillside to the N and NE of the cottage there are a series of oval and subrectangular pre-Improvement fields, demarcated by earth-and-stone banks, which are depicted on the 1st edition map and annotated as 'Old Fences'. The fields are also depicted on the 2nd edition map and, in a more skeletal form, on the current 1:10,000 map (1980).
