The Douglas C-133 Cargomaster is an American large turboprop cargo aircraft built between 1956 and 1961 by the Douglas Aircraft Company for use with the United States Air Force.

6 天之前 · The C-133 entered service in the late 1950’s, and was on front line duty until they were retired in 1971. 52 were built, with 50 going to the USAF and 2 held back by Douglas as test beds. Of the 50, 15 were C-133A, 18 were C-133B, and 17 were intermediate versions. The USAF found that the C-133 was able to carry the Thor, an early type of ICBM.

Thirty-five C-133A and fifteen C-133B were built and were in service with the United States Air Force. The aircraft was designed with enlarged tail and side doors as well as a bigger and open cargo area. The C-133A bore several heavy and sizeable loads, which include Atlas and Titan intercontinental ballistic missiles.

The foreground aircraft is the third Cargomaster built, C-133A, 54-0137. The aircraft arrived at MASDC for storage on January 7, 1971. It was transferred to the Navy and stored until January 12, 1976 when it was sold as scrap to Kolar, a local scrap dealer at Tucson. It was registered as N2251X in May 1978.

The C-133A (Tail Number 56-1999) was assigned to Travis from February thru November 1960. It was the last Cargomaster in flyable condition and is on permanent static display at the Travis Heritage Center.

C-133A AF Ser. No. 56-2008 is preserved at the National Museum of the United States Air Force at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, Ohio. On 16 December 1958, this aircraft established a world record for propeller-driven aircraft by carrying a payload of 117,900 lb (53,479 kg) to an altitude of 10,000 ft (3,048 m).
