The Elcan C79 optic was selected and this required a flat top upper receiver be developed. The Canadians worked with Richard Swan of A.R.M.S. fame to create an upper that used a Weaver rail profile designed by Mr. Swan.

The C7A1 Light Support Weapon is a Canadian light machine gun, further developed from the predecessor model, the C7 Light Support Weapon. It features a removable C79 optic which is mounted to the top receiver of the rifle by the manufacturer.

It features a full auto fire control group, rifle-length gas system, A1 sights, an A2 stock, A2 handguards, and a 20-inch cold hammer forged barrel. The C7A1 variant does not feature A1 sights, but an optic, manufactured by Elcan.
