Founded in 1921, the CCP emerged victorious in the Chinese Civil War against the Kuomintang and proclaimed the establishment of the People's Republic of China under the leadership of Mao Zedong in October 1949. Since then, the CCP has governed China and has had sole control over the People's Liberation Army (PLA).

The CCP grew rapidly in the Northern Expedition (1925–1927), a military unification campaign led by Sun Yat-sen's successor, Chiang Kai-shek. The party, still led by urban intellectuals, developed a radical agenda of mass mobilization, labor organization, rural uprisings, anti-imperialism, and national unification.

Today, the Chinese Communist Party is the world’s second largest political organisation with a membership of over 90 million. As the only political party in China, it has consistently held power since Mao proclaimed the founding of the People’s Republic in 1949. At present, the CCP governs a nation state of well over 1 billion people.
