As a forensic application of CD31 IHC, the expression pattern of CD31 has been examined in human lung tissues. CD31 expression was found to be lower in lungs from burn shock fatalities than in those from hemorrhagic shock fatalities [13].

In immunohistochemistry (IHC), CD31 is primarily used to demonstrate the presence of endothelial cells (Figure 2), to measure vessel density or to quantify (neo-)angiogenesis.
