In support of its ground forces, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) emergency response air program includes 23 Grumman S-2T 1,200-gallon airtankers, 12 UH-1H Super Huey helicopters, and 16 OV-10A tactical aircraft. It is in the process of adding 7 C-130 H 4,000-gallon airtankers.

2024年12月3日 · At the time of the Laguna Fire, the California Department of Forestry (CDF), later known as CAL FIRE, was contracting seven privately owned air tankers consisting of de-militarized Grumman TBM Avengers, F7F Tigercats, Consolidated PBYs, and a Boeing B-17.

However its small capacity 400 gallon tank proved unsatisfactory and two Grumman F7F Tigercats were acquired in a deal with George Kreitzberg. The F7Fs had their underwing spray tanks removed and were fitted with 800 gallon belly retardant tanks.

During the ensuing years other aircraft were converted to air tankers and used by CDF. Among these were Twin Beech, Boeing B-17, Consolidated PBY, and Grumman F7F. The air tanker program continued to expand until finally in the early 1970s, a total of 14 TBMs, five F7Fs, one PBY and one B-17 comprised the CDF fleet.

Grumman S-2 Tracker #75, N420DF is based in Paso Robles. Grumman S-2 Tracker #81, N447DF used to fly as tanker #93. It is based in Hollister. The Associated Air Tanker Pilots Memorial Fund is supported in part through the sales of prints of a painting of N447DF as #93 by aviation artist Barry Rudolph.

Grumman S-2T, N426DF CDF Tanker #88 breaks into the left hand pattern for Runway 07 at the Santa Barbara Airport. It originally served with the U.S. Navy as S2F, BuNo 152824. It was registered to US Forestry Commission as N511DF on Aug 21, 1996.

The Grumman F7F Tigercat was the first twin-engined fighter aircraft to enter service with the United States Navy. Designed for the new Midway-class aircraft carriers, the aircraft were too large to operate from earlier decks.
