The CFT test is the primary screening test used to identify cattle infected with bovine TB. This test stimulates an immune response to Mycobacterium bovis using an intradermal injection of a Purified Protein Derivative (PPD) of tuberculin into the skin of the caudal fold (the fold of skin at the base of the tail).

There are a variety of tests available for diagnosing TB in cattle. The primary method of testing is the Caudal Fold Tuberculin (CFT) Test. Authorized veterinarians inject tuberculin in between the layers of the caudal tail fold, and are able to determine presence of disease based on reaction to the injection (swelling, hardness, etc.).

Present screening methods include the Caudal Fold Tuberculin test (CFT) which is read at 72 h ± 6 h. If the animal responds to the CFT, then this test is followed by the Comparative Cervical Tuberculin test (CCT) also read at 72 h ± 6 h as a confirmatory test.

A Comparative Cervical Tuberculin (CCT) test must be applied to responders within 10 days of the CFT injection, or you must wait 60 days to retest cattle and 90 days to retest cervids. Alternatively, blood for a gamma interferon test is collected within 30 days (optimally within 3-7 days) of the CFT injection.
