The EMD GP38-2 is an American four-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors, Electro-Motive Division. Part of the EMD Dash 2 line, the GP38-2 was an upgraded version of the earlier GP38 .

Renumbered 4707 in 1988.

CN train crosses Hwy. 32/57 on former joint MILW and SOO tracks at Hilbert, WI on 20 Feb. '13. CN 4704 and train L595 wait in the clear at Waupaca Foundry plant 2 for mainline traffic to clear. A bit of HDR brightened up a dark shot on what was for the several hours before this shot, a very nice day in the Waupaca Area.

2024年12月17日 · A former Rock Island GP38-2, formerly named the "Fred McKim," is ahead of this Missouri Pacific freight at Austin, Texas in May, 1980. Following the Rock's shutdown, Missouri Pacific picked up the railroad's fleet of GP38-2's.

Part of the EMD Dash 2 line, the GP38-2 was an upgraded version of the earlier GP38. Power is provided by an EMD 645E 16-cylinder engine, which generates 2000 horsepower. The GP38-2W is a Canadian variant of the GP38-2 and a forerunner of todays wide-nose units.

2022年12月29日 · CN GP38-2 #4908, a Phase 2a1 GP38-2 originally built as LIRR #274, seen in 2022. The GP38-2 was introduced by EMD in 1972 as a replacement for the GP38.

2025年1月27日 · CN acquires GP38-2 locomotives directly from BNSF; Essex Terminal Railway unveils a new livery. While CN regularly acquires six-axle locomotives for main line power and has units rebuilt and repowered for modernization programs, purchase of four-axle switching locomotives is sporadic at best.
