CNR EMD GP9u #4100 at Concord Ont. July 2001 There were a total of 646 GP9u's built for Canadian railways. They were built between January 1954 - August 1963. They used a V16 engine producing 1750 hp.

The EMD GP9 is a four-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division between 1954 and 1959. The GP9 succeeded the GP7 as the second model of EMD's General Purpose (GP) line, [1] incorporating a new sixteen- cylinder engine which generated 1,750 horsepower (1.30 MW). [2] .

One short- term enhancement was increased sand capacity on the end of the long hood, resulting in a distinct box under the headlight, replacing the pointed contour of the end of the hood. This was applied to the first GP9u rebuilds, including 1512 to 1515, 8200 to 8203, and 1691 (the only phase 3 unit with this feature).
