Most SD70s are still in service with Norfolk Southern and Canadian National (CN), which merged with Illinois Central in 1999. In February 2017, NS began a program to convert its SD70s from DC to AC, which will also have a new wide-nose cab, and several other upgrades.

2024年12月16日 · After relative failures with the SD50 and SD60, EMD finally got back on track with the SD70, which was released in 1992, albeit at the cost of having already lost first place in the market to GE. The locomotive featured EMD’s 16-cylinder 710G3B engine and was rated at 4,000 horsepower although that was not its biggest selling point.

2024年6月13日 · In 1996, CN ordered a version with an isolated cab (the SD70I) and a 4,300-horsepower version was ordered by BNSF, CN and Ontario Northland (the SD75M and SD75I). In 1999, Union Pacific placed the largest single domestic locomotive order up to that time for 1,000 SD70M units, later increasing the total to more than 1,400.
