The EMD SW9 is a model of diesel switcher locomotives built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between November 1950 and December 1953. Additional SW9s were built by General Motors Diesel in London Ontario Canada from December 1950 to March 1953. Power was provided by an EMD 567B 12-cylinder engine, producing 1,200 horsepower (895 kW). [1]

With the introduction of the new 567C prime mover that year, EMD rolled out its new 1200-horsepower SW9/1200 model which shared the same basic body (with minor variations) and power rating with its predecessor, the SW9 (which had a 567B prime mover).

The SW9 is externally the same as an SW1200, and the SW8 is externally the same as an SW900 or an SW600. The only physical differences between the two actual models (SW8 and SW9) are the exhaust stacks (with the SW9 having two and the SW8 having one).
