Canadian National began ordering General Purpose (GP) diesels later than many other North American railroads and as a result only purchased 24 GP7s. Later, in October 1958, GMD rebuilt wrecked F3A 9005 (originally built in 1948) with a GP9 carbody to give a GP7M 4824.

Canadian National GP7 #4803 This locomotive is the only item in the roundhouse which can be said to be of national significance to the history of Canadian railways. This diesel-electric road-switching locomotive is mechanically complete except for the absence of traction motors.

With improved front and rear visibility due to its center cab design, as well as lower maintenance costs, the GP7 was an immediate victory for railroads. In the mid-1950’s EMD increased the output of these units to 1,750 horsepower and were sold under the GP9 series.
