The EMD GP9 is a four-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division in the United States, and General Motors Diesel in Canada between January, 1954, and August, 1963. US production ended in December, 1959, while an additional thirteenunits were built in Canada, including the last two in August, 1963.

They were rebuilt in batches by CN at their Pointe St. Charles Shops in Montreal, Quebec during the 1980's and 1990's from GP9 locomotives originally built by GMDD in the 1950's. They were given the designation "RM" for "Remanufactured".

Jun 28, 2009 · The Electromotive Division GP9 is a 4 axle, 1,750 HP diesel electric locomotive built by EMD of Lagrange, Illinois from 1954 to 1963. Building upon the already successful GP7, EMD offered the GP9 as a go anywhere, do anything locomotive. The locomotive's 567C engine produced 1,750 HP, 250 more than that of a GP7.
