55189 (cr 419, lms 15189 & br 55189) 419 was built in 1907 at a cost of £1,627 and like most of 439 class locomotives it was constructed at the CR company’s St Rollox works in Glasgow. CR419 subsequently became LMS 15189 in 1923 on Grouping and 55189 under British Railways following the nationalisation of the railways in 1948.

It was a development of earlier Caledonian Railway 0-4-4T locomotives, including the 19 Class and 92 Class, and predecessor of the 431 Class. The 439 Class was introduced by John F. McIntosh in 1900 and a modified version was introduced by William Pickersgill in 1915.

Following the formation of the London Midland and Scottish Railway in 1923, the CR 419 locomotive became LMS No 15189 and its Caledonian Railway blue livery gave way to a more sombre black. It was then allocated to Ardrossan shed and later Edinburgh Dalry Road.
