828 was amongst the 17 of her class which were turned out in full Caledonian Railway blue passenger livery and fitted with the Westinghouse air brake system. The 812 class locomotives were intended for use on a variety of duties all over the Caledonian's extensive system from Carlisle to Aberdeen.

Also as built 828, along with most if not all 812's, was fitted with protruding wash-out plugs with the plug bolt lying horizontally rather than the later larger flush items with the plug lying radially. 828 still had the earlier wash-outs in LMS days but I've no idea ...
