Conrail U36C 6592 (built 1972 as EL 3321, became CR 6889) at the servicing facility on the north end of Indiana Harbor Belts Blue Island Yard in Riverdale, Illinois - April 23, 1977. CR U36C 6592 (ex-EL 3321) waits for assignment at the Conway engine terminal in August, 1977.

Built for the Erie Lackawanna as their 3316 to 3328, these thirteen 3,600 6-axle locomotives became Conrail 6587 to 6599. In November of 1979 they were renumbered to 6884 to 6896 in order to make room for more new C30-7A's. All were retired in December 1987 and returned to the lessor and are presumed scrapped.

The GE U36C is a 3600 hp diesel-electric locomotive model built by GE Transportation Systems. The length of the locomotive was 67 ft 3 in (20.50 m), standard for U30C, U33C, U34CH, U36C, U36CG, C30-7 and C36-7. The U36C also had steel capped pistons.

U36C Phases. GE used a common body for the various U-boats, so this list is based on phases of the U30B. Phase II with the forward radiator intake mounted high had oil bath filters; low-mounted intake was for paper air filters. Phase IId- horizontal drip rail on the radiator disappears. Phase IIe- built-up area on pilots disappears.

CR U36C 6587, GP38-2 8112, and SDP45 6697 run light at Allentown yard. CR U36C 6587 rests in the service line outside the Morrisville shops on August 17, 1979.
