What are CRE? Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) are a type of bacteria. They can cause serious infections that can be hard to treat. CRE got their name from the fact that they are resistant to carbapenems. Carbapenems are an advanced class of antibiotics.

CRE infections are spreading, and urgent action is needed to stop them. Although CRE germs are not very common, they have increased from 1% to 4% in the past decade. One type of CRE has increased from 2% to 10%.
