Aug 21, 2019 · Designed to operate off its diesel generator or draw power from an electrified third rail, the FL9 was an attempt by New Haven to eschew its costly high-voltage catenary and power generating systems, which they hoped to abandon. Instead, both the electric zone and the units designed to kill it off survived into the 21st century.

Built between October 1956 and November 1960 for the New Haven, EMD designed the FL9's to operate in passenger service as electrics through use of a third rail shoe or operate more efficiently as a diesel-electric.

The Railroad Museum of New England in Thomaston, Ct. has three FL9's in their collection. Number 2002 and 2033 are stored outside. 2002 is still in her original NH paint while the 2033 sports Metro North colours. Number 2019 has been beautifully restored to her original NH paint scheme and is used on occasion for their weekend tourist train runs.

Amtrak tr. 64 arrives in Poughkeepsie behind FL-9 486, MN 2026 and CDOT 2006 are laying over. A pair of CDOT FL9s in the New Haven scheme pushes a Danbury branch train toward NY during the morning rush. During the late '80's and early '90's, the Connecticut Valley Railroad Museum was actively seeking a new home.
