A profiling CTD measures water parameters as it travels vertically through the water, typically lowered over the side of a ship with a winch or by hand to take measurements of a column of water. A profiling CTD package often is placed inside a cage, to protect the package from collision with the side of the ship.

The SWiFT CTD is robust and portable. Constructed from titanium to provide unmatched durability, the CTD sensors are housed in a strong acetal protective cage. An optional deployment cage is also available to bolt onto the instrument to secure additional weight and so help the SWiFT CTD get to depth in fast-flowing currents.

However, a CTD may be installed into almost any location inside the cage, simply by moving the Bars, or flipping the clamp set around. The following procedure will center your CTD in side to side in the cage. Longest support bar (bar 2, PN 231882) is used to secure the connector Endcap, and is placed onto the lower crossbar pair.

It measures Conductivity, Temperature and Depth, which in turn are used to determine the salinity of the seawater. Typically, the respective sensors are mounted inside a stainless steel cage which also holds a number of water samplers, the so-called rosette.

As the ship steams slowly ahead, scientists in a lab on the ship will guide the CTD up and down in the water column, occasionally sending the instrument an electronic signal to collect a water sample in a bottle mounted on the instrument's cage.
