The CVI Range Assessment (Roman, 2007, 2018) is a functional vision assessment desiged to investigate the visual and behavioral characterstics associated with CVI. It measures the degree of impact of CVI on a 0 – 10 continuium where 0 represents no visual function and 10 represents near typical visual function.

The scoring guides determine a student’s range of visual function and placement within three broad phases of CVI. An educational team can then use the guidelines defined in the three phases to plan educational needs and interventions.

Roman-Lantzy’s CVI Range uses a scale of 0-10 to score and measure functional vision of an individual with CVI, with 0 indicating no visual response and 10 being almost typical vision.

Christine Roman-Lantzy, PhD, defines 10 characteristics of visual behavior that are quantifiable using the CVI Range ©, which are outlined in her textbook (2007, 2018). The characteristics are visual processing functions that occur in cortices of the temporal, parietal, and probably the frontal lobe of the brain.

There are a number of purposes associated with The CVI Range. It is used to describe a present level of functional vision including a broad Phase (I, II, III) and a set of 2 specific scores (Rating I & Rating II)

According to the CVI Range, (child’s name) has a range score of (add score 1-10) and is therefore considered in Phase (I, II OR III). Phase (I, II OR III) indicates that (child’s name) is (use wording from Phase Chart, i.e., ‘building visual behaviours’).

The CVI Range is the only educational tool to assess the degree of impact on the visual functioning of a child with CVI. Developed by Christine Roman-Lantzy, PhD, specifically for those with CVI, the CVI Range was an outgrowth of the system she used as a TVI/O&M to teach children who had been dismissed as unteachable.
