CVW-9 is attached to Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 3 and flagship USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72), and consists of eight squadrons flying F-35C Lightning II, F/A-18E/F Super Hornets, EA-18G Growlers, E-2D Hawkeyes, CMV-22B Ospreys and MH-60R/S Sea Hawks.

CVW-9 is currently assigned to Carrier Strike Group THREE (CCSG-3) as the Strike Warfare Commander for operations at sea with the USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN 72) Strike Group.

CVW-9 ended its 10-year association with NIMITZ in March 1998. After deploying in 2000 on board USS JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN-74) to WESTPAC/IO/Arabian Gulf, CVW-9 participated in Operation NOBLE EAGLE after 11 September 2001, providing air protection along the West Coast of the United States.
