CSX`s CW44-9`s 9000 - 9052 were also built on CW40-8 frames with CW40-8 carbodies. The major difference was they had later style "split" radiator grills. I never thought I`d hear myself say "I miss `em" but now in 2020 "I miss `em" Happy Modeling, Tom photo #1 and #2 ex Conrails 6063 and 6116 with "bug eyed" class lights
CSX CW40-8 Horns - Trainorders.com
The C40-8's, and the first couple orders of CW40-8's were delivered with different horns than the later ones. I think the later ones were the K5LA (the typical CSX horn that sounds like Amtrak's horn).
New CSX "8-40CWM"? - Trainorders.com
As far as -9s, CSX doesn't have any as we know them, the 9000 series is as close to a -9 as csx gets, they have several differences from a CW40-8 if looked at closely externally. The two bigger items noticed to the naked eye is a fatter radiator section and one extra step in the stairwells. One could say the 9000s are a -9 in a -8 body.

1. An E/B freight is stopped on track two of CSX's Baltimore Terminal Sub just short of Hollins Ferry Road awaiting a re-crew. GP40-2-6439 is on the point. To the right, on track three, CW40-8-7839 awaits its next assignment. In the distance, the Curtis Bay Branch overpass is …
Eastern Railroad Discussion > What the difference?
If you happen to come across a -8 and -9 coupled rear to rear, the -9's wings are much thicker than the -8. GE seems to think that each new engine has to have thicker wings, because the AC60CW's have those absurdly thick ones. Kinda difficult to tell at first with a stand alone -8 or -9, but it's just a matter of getting used to the proportions.

Is Bachmann trying to Price Themselves out of the Market?
I noticed with the newer Bachmann 44-tonner, the online "street price" looks to be about 40% off retail ($239 vs $399). So that would make the street price of the upcoming CW40-8 about $275. Compare that the street price of the new Atlas C40-8 w/ESU Loksound at $205. Ted Curphey Ontario, OR Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 09/14/24 18:52 by ...
CSX Russell Yard moving last of CW40-8 & CW60AC
Drove by {from a distance so couldn't get any pictures) the Russell, KY yard today and they have all the remaining CW60AC's and CW40-8's lined up for movement to unknown destiny. These units have been in storage here for quite a while and the last couple of weeks it looked like they were getting the fuel out of the tanks.
