2024年9月16日 · Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing is a variation of Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) technology, used to transmit multiple optical signals through a single fiber. Unlike Dense WDM (DWDM), CWDM employs wider spacing between wavelengths, making the equipment less complex and more cost-effective.

Passive CWDM devices multiplex (combine) or demultiplex (split) fiber signals at different wavelengths. Application: Ideal for systems with fewer channels and shorter distances, where cost and complexity are key factors. Passive DWDM devices are more complex than CWDM, due to smaller channel spacing (typically 0.4 nm to 1.6 nm).

CWDM was the original multiplexing technology and was introduced as a low-cost approach to increasing bandwidth utilisation of the fibre. Using several wavelengths of light and by increasing the channel spacing between wavelengths on the fibre, CWDM allows for a simple and affordable method of carrying up to 16 channels on a single fibre.
