2021年4月1日 · The use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for cardiogenic shock in patients with decompensated heart failure has been increasing over time, with uses including bridge to myocardial recovery, bridge to durable left ventricular assist device (LVAD), or bridge to heart transplantation (HT) (1, 2, 3, 4).

Background The efficacy of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) as a bridge to left ventricular assist device (LVAD) remains unclear, and recipients of the more contemporary HeartMate 3 (HM3) LVAD are not well represented in previous studies. We therefore undertook a multicenter, retrospective study of this population.

However, the sickest ECMO patients could not be matched to a non-ECMO cohort. Based on the preceding results, we could infer that transitioning the relatively stable (less sick) ECMO patients to LVAD should provide survival similar to other INTERMACS (Interagency Registry for Mechanically Assisted Circulatory Support) profile-1 patients.
