Greater coat of arms displays the three historical regions —the Czech lands —which make up the nation. Lesser coat of arms displays lone silver double-tailed lion in red shield. The current coats of arms, which was adopted in 1992, was designed by Czech heraldist Jiří Louda. [1]

Three variants of the coat of arms of Czechoslovakia were adopted in 1920 along with the Czechoslovak Constitution of 1920.

With the independent Republic of Czechoslovakia coming into existence in October 1918, the need arose to have a new sovereign national emblem designed to represent the new constitutional situation but also the newly established state entity's continuity with the history of the Czech Lands.

When Czechoslovakia split into two independent states in January 1993, the Czech Republic kept this flag as its own. While the blue triangle no longer represents Slovakia, it does remain a symbol of impartiality and sovereignty.

In 1649, after the Thirty Years' War, Ferdinand III added an armour arm in silver holding a silver sword emerging from the city gate.
