Campy Blood-Free Selective Medium (CCDA) is used with cefoperazone for the selective isolation of Campylobacter spp. in a laboratory setting.

Campylobacter spp. colonies are flat and round to irregular with smooth edges. On CCDA agar the colonies are often translucent and greyish-white with a metallic sheen. Campylobacter Blood-Free Selective Medium (CCDA) was first described by Bolton. This medium was formulated to replace blood with a combination of charcoal, ferrous sulphate, and sodium pyruvate. Also, in order to improve selectivity, Cefoperazone replaced the Cephazolin utilised in the original formulation.

Modified CCDA medium has been confirmed as suitable for isolation of Campylobacter spp. from non-clinical samples following enrichment in Exeter broth 7. The use of Campylobacter Blood-Free Medium is specified by the U.K. Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF) in a validated method for isolation of Campylobacter from foods 4 .
