NAC is the N-acetyl derivative of the protein amino acid L-cysteine. NAC is the delivery form of L-cysteine. It is more stable and better absorbed. NAC is a reducing agent with antioxidant activity. Other known activity is as a mucolytic, hepatoprotectant and anti-apoptotic, particularly in pancreatic beta-cells and nerve cells.

NAC increases airway reactivity and adverse reactions in cats with experimental asthma. Adverse effects of NAC were not noted in a previous study of cats, most without asthma.
