If you would like to read the fig file using a Windows workstation, refer to this article. Port 1, bits 0-3 hook up to one cable, and Port 1, bits 4-7 hook up to the other.

If the corresponding test LED on the remote fails to light, then there is a short of that pair in the cable under test. If more than one LED lights, it indicates a short with another pair. A dark test LED on the transmitter indicates that pair is open circuit.

In this project, I am going to make a LAN cable tester with just a few basic electronics components. The entire project, excluding the battery cost me just a bit over $3. With this tester we can easily check RJ45 or RJ11 network cables for their continuity, sequence and if they have a short-circuit. For this project we need: 1 x Perfboard.

I was looking to make a complete circuit with the tester to verify where the wire began and where it terminated you can replace the direct connection with any distance of CAT5 cable and this should work just fine (in my case the longest run was about 100').
