Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad SD45 516 at Clyde, Illinois on an unknown day in December 1969, photographer unknown, duplicate slide by Al Chione, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 516 was built in January 1969 ( c/n 34551 ), and went on to a variety of other careers.

I first saw the BN 6465 on a trip to Spokane, WA 8-4-71 on an eastbound BN freight led by 6477/6465/6632 (SD45/SD45/F45) and noted the 6465 as being in CB&Q colors. I took a photo of the BN 6465 at Interbay, WA 8-1-74 after arriving on train #179 with units 6465/6482.

In January of 1969 EMD produced SD45 522 for the CB&Q. It was one of 15 SD45's built for the Burlington numbered 516-530 and painted in the green/white scheme. After the BN merger in 1970 I only noted one CB&Q numbered SD45 in the Seattle area and that was the 522 coming into Interbay on a westbound 7-7-70 in a consist of GN 418/CBQ 522/BN 6434.

BN SD45 6459 was built in January of 1969 as CB&Q 518, one of the Burlington Route's fifteen SD45's numbered 516-530. Fourteen months after they were delivered the BN merger occurred in March 1970 and the Q518 was renumbered to BN 6459 and assigned to Havre, MT along with the other ex-CB&Q SD45's.

I received a call from my boss to go to Minneapolis to replace a lead installation engineer assigned to the Great Northern delivery of SD45s and SDP40s, who had just terminated his employment with EMD. The GN SD45s were the first production SD45s. I spent the next six weeks with two other EMD field installation engineers completing the GN delivery.
