Cetamid is an inhibitor of carbonic anhydrase. By inhibiting the reaction catalysed by this enzyme in the renal tubules, Cetamid increases the excretion of bicarbonate and of cations, chiefly sodium and potassium, and so promotes alkaline diuresis.
