The first GP7/GP9 units for Chicago & North Western Railway came in August and September 1950 as three ex-General Motors' Electro Motive Division GP7 demonstrators. GM-EMD had built the three units in October and November 1949, and January 1950, to show off its new GP-type concept. The first to be completed by EMD was GP7 demo number 922.

Chicago Great Western GP7 121 and Caboose 604 at Ingalton, IL, April 12, 1966. The CGW had only 2 GP7s and no GP9s. CGW 121 was built in September 1951 and was acquired by the C&NW in the July 1958 merger and retained its CGW road number, was rebuilt by the C&NW to GP7R 4338 in December 1974, retired June 1985, and traded to EMD

FP7A 116A is the only engine remaining in CGW color. GP7 120 was rebuilt by EMD in 1956 to GP9R. GP35 301 does not exist, although some guy in Iowa believes that he has a photo. SD40 403 to be renumbered UP4523. 1000 was rebuilt in 1929 as the motor car of the "Blue Bird."

Chicago & North Western Railway Extra 121 West, GP7 121 running light, coupled a single boxcar at Galena Junction, Illinois and returned east on the former Chicago Great Western Railway main line. Engineer Delbert Hatton notched forward the throttle on the 1- percent grade out of Aiken, Illinois.
