The EMD SD40 is an American 6-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between January 1966 and August 1972. 1,268 locomotives were built between 1966 and 1972. In 1972, an improved version with new electronics was developed and marketed as a new locomotive, the SD40-2.

2006年7月3日 · In 1966 CGW ordered 9 EMD SD40s, nos 401-409. These were the largest motive power the Great Western would ever have. They were the only 6 motor (axle) units on CGW as well.

FP7A 116A is the only engine remaining in CGW color. GP7 120 was rebuilt by EMD in 1956 to GP9R. GP35 301 does not exist, although some guy in Iowa believes that he has a photo. SD40 403 to be renumbered UP4523. 1000 was rebuilt in 1929 as the motor car of the "Blue Bird."

SD40 221, ex Great Western 404, leads an eastbound manifest on ex Milwaukee trackage at Lawler, IA in December 1998. The I&M Rail Link rosters six ex CGW SD40's that move freight between the same gateways as they did for the CGW, albeit on ex Milwaukee routes.
