The most common reason a chameleon will close their eyes during the day is because of an internal infection whether it be bacterial, parasitic, viral, fungal or whatever else nature can throw at us. This is where the internal balance is off and the chameleon feels sick.

His one eye is only closed until a noise or distraction comes about, if a cricket comes near, he will open it and follow perfectly.
