A cheap van is perfectly fine as long as you're not planning on driving constantly. It doesn't even have to be road worthy if you don't drive it. We all know Sprinters aren't cheap, but I'm talking any kind of high top van -- Promaster, Transit, hell, even the Nissan NV. The only other cheap options that I can see that will let me stand up if I wanna stick with vans is getting some kind of conversion van or a standard cargo van that somebody put a high top in (seems pretty rare).
