Chen's Notation, also known as Entity-Relationship (ER) notation or Chen's ERD notation, is a diagramming technique used in database design and software engineering to represent the relationships between entities in a database. It was developed by Dr. Peter Chen in the 1970s as part of his work on the Entity-Relationship Model (ERM).

ERDs define a graphical language for data modeling at a high level of abstraction. ERDs map well to relational databases at a high level, but can also be used as a precursor to building non-relational databases. ERDs were conceived of by Peter Chen and described in a 1976 paper.

Chen’s notation of the entity-relationship diagram (ERD) reveals the data and domain models’ information using entities, attributes, and relationships. Chen ERD can easily be explained by citing an example of a banking system where, unlike other ER diagram notations, one can learn more about the attributes as standalone boxes.
