The Elo rating system was officially adopted by the U.S. Chess Federation in 1960 and by FIDE in 1970. Many chess organizations and websites also use this system to rate players. On Chess.com, we use a modified version of the Elo system called the Glicko system, which takes more variables into consideration to determine a player's rating.

However the past few days I have been facing players ranging from 1600 to 2400 while I myself have been hovering around 1930~. This doesn't feel normal at all. A chess rating is a tool that makes it easy to measure a player's probable performance against another opponent. It is expressed by a number that can go from 100 to (theoretically) infinity. The highest rating ever achieved by a player is an impressive 2882 by GM Magnus Carlsen .
