Shadow puppetry, or Shadow Play, was very popular during the Tang (618 - 907) and Song (960 - 1279) dynasties in many parts of China. Shadow puppets were first made of paper sculpture, later from the leather of donkeys or oxen. That's why their Chinese name is pi ying, which means shadows of leather.

Shadow puppetry has been a popular shadow play in China since at least the Song dynasty (960–1279). There are three major categories of Chinese shadow puppets: hand shadow puppets, paper shadow puppets, and leather shadow puppets. Puppeteers perform shadow shows by manipulating “carved” leather puppets and by “using the voice to set the scene.”

Important collections of Chinese puppets are found at the Field Museum in Chicago and [American Museum of Natural History] in New York, both acquired by the major German scholar Berthold Laufer in the early years of the 20th century. Other collections are found in Germany, Sweden, and museums around the world.
