One media nickname was ‘Cinderella in Sneakers’. In 1974, Evert won back-to-back Grand Slam titles at Roland Garros and Wimbledon – the first of 18 majors won across an unbroken 13-year span.

On March 22, 1973, in front of a few hundred fans in the blue-collar town not known at all for tennis, 18-year-old Chris Evert of Florida defeated 16-year-old Martina Navratilova of communist Czechoslovakia, 7-6 (5-4), 6-3 at women’s professional event in Akron.

In the first round of the tournament Chris Evert played and won against Martina Navratilova in straight sets, 7–6 (5–1), 6–3, after Navartilova had failed to serve out the first set at 6–5 and 30–0.
