The Cisco AGS+ and 7000 routers were designed before the advent of high speed computer buses and economical RISC-based CPUs. So, when Cisco's engineers started looking for ways to boost switching performance, there weren't many off-the-shelf solutions from which to choose.

The architecture of the AGS+ and Cisco 7000 routers formed the foundation from which the later Cbus-based routers were built.

The AGS+ was one of Cisco's early products, originally based on a 68020 CPU board and a multibus + "cisco bus" backplane. (Ours has a later revision CPU board with a 68040.) This one is configured with FDDI and 14 ethernet ports.

2024年3月28日 · I was just thinking about how in the early 2000's when I was just a wee little lad (like 18), I wonder a pallet full of Cisco AGS, MGS, IGS, and CGS routers for $1. It cost over $100 to ship it, but it was awesome. I tried using them to study, but even back then they were not very useful. Still cool, though.

2021年12月18日 · The history of the AGS+ is: In the year 2000 I obtained a CCNA job with at a large financial company (east coast USA). This AGS was being thrown out (in 2001) since they had upgraded to newer hardware. The Cisco 7000 series router represented the next step in the evolution of the AGS and the Cbus architecture. Other than the mechanical structure and outward appearance, the 7000 wasn't drastically different from its predecessor, the AGS+.
