If you want to conquer using a specific era then use mods or just start the game in that era and set the speed to marathon so you win before it leaves the era.

In civ 4 you could skip half the tech tree and still get GDRs. So ya, you really aren't able to get them until basically end game, which will depend on the difficulty setting.

Giant Death Robots should be limited to 1 unit per Civilization in order to make the games other units more relevant. GDRs are never relevant when I play, if I have them I’m usually almost done with science victory and if the AI has them you just gotta wear them out with jets.
