Commercial drivers need special CDL endorsements to transport passengers or drive a school bus. Here are the basic requirements you’ll need to know.

There are three commercial driver’s license classes and four self-certification types. Commercial drivers, firefighters, and non-commercial drivers with Class A and Class B licenses are required to meet federal medical standards.

Any legal combination of vehicles, including vehicles under Class B and Class C. any single vehicle with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of more than 10,000 pounds. any trailer bus, with endorsement OR more than 1 vehicle, with endorsement.

What is a Class B CDL? A Class B commercial driver license is required to operate: A single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 lbs. or heavier. As with Class A licenses, you may be required to possess specific endorsements to operate some vehicles with a Class B license.

Class B: With a Class B license drivers can operate trucks large passenger buses, segmented buses, box trucks or dump trucks with trailers. The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) requirement is 26,001 pounds or more.

A Class C CDL with the P endorsement may be utilized for a passenger transportation vehicle classified as a bus which has a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) and gross weight of 26,000 pounds or less. Prior to the DMV being able to issue the P endorsement on a Class C CDL, a Class B CDL with the P endorsement would have

Class B CDL: This license is required if you plan to drive a single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more, or a combination of vehicles with a GCWR of 26,001 pounds or more where the vehicle being towed weighs less than 10,000 pounds.

To become a school bus driver in the United States you will need to get your Class B CDL (commercial driver’s license), passenger endorsement, and school bus endorsement among other things.
