Built as N&W 1106 October 1965 (c/n 3429-07), it became surplus to the N&W in 1973. The C&NW leased six of the 30 N&W units in 1973, later purchasing the entire N&W fleet of C628's. This locomotive waq retired October 2, 1990.

Flying over a SD70MAC in BN Paint was the patched CNW we caught in Drexel on the KCS tiis morning. It is now on its way west through BN Jct. on UP Train CWXVM 08. You can see the C&NW number (8805) on the hood through the patch. The only patched CNW AC4400CW with an unpatched nose sits at KCS Knoche Yard as a DPU on a coal load.

The unit is the first unit out of the 35 locomotive order for CNW that has been retired/scrapped. This scrapping occurred around two weeks ago and the 6707 was the first unit to meet its demise.

At the time, the big Alco's were the heaviest units on the C&NW and were intended for system-wide mainline service. Two years later, the C628's replaced the aging Fairbanks-Morse H16-66's in ore service in Northern Michigan. The Alco's were well suited for these low-speed heavy ore trains and were finally replaced in October, 1990 with SD50's.

UP 6706 is the only patched CNW unit on the UP that is currently in service. There are four patched C44-9W still on the UP roster, one of which recently moved to Wabtec for a rebuild, but they have been stored out of service for at least 5 years now. Earlier this month I caught this UP southbound at Salt Creek along the Salton Sea.
