SD18 #6640 started life as Southern Ry. SD24 #2524, then renumbered to 6343, before moving on to PNC 1843 and eventually becomming CNW #6640. The unit lost it's turbocharger and 2400 horsepower rating, but retained it's high nose and it's Southern style nose mounted bell. Looking very nice in CNW paint for a 25 year old engine built in Oct. 1959.

One of the most fondly remembered was the Chicago & North Western which maintained a sprawling network of more than 11,000 route miles across Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, Illinois, Missouri, Michigan, and even reached North Dakota and Wyoming.

According to the Fall 2002 issue of North Western Lines (historical society publication), 6640 started life as Southern EMD SD24 2524 (later SOU 6343), and was rebuilt as a Precision National (PNC -- a leasing company) "SD10". This unit was selected by the CNW to join their roster, and became "SD18" 6640.

2015年1月27日 · CNW bought a number of PNC SD18M's that were rebuilt from SOU SD24's; 1811 became CNW's 6628. After working for CNW and UP (who did not plan to keep them long enough to be given a UP number), several SD18M's, including the 6628, went to work for a short time at Pacific Harbor Line; 6628 was PHL's first #40.
