The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a multiple-aptitude battery that measures developed abilities and helps predict future academic and occupational success in the military. It is administered annually to more than one million military applicants, high school, and post-secondary students.
Understanding ASVAB Scores
The IRT model underlying ASVAB scoring is the three-parameter logistic (3PL) model. The 3PL model represents the probability that an examinee at a given level of ability will respond correctly to an individual item with given characteristics.
What to Expect When You Take the ASVAB | ASVAB
On average, it takes about 2 hours to complete the proctored CAT-ASVAB. Your test scores will be available immediately following your testing session at the MEPS or MET site. The number of questions and time limits for the subtests on the proctored CAT-ASVAB vary depending upon whether “tryout” questions are administered.

ASVAB Fact Sheet
The purpose of the Fact Sheet is to provide you with information about the military enlistment test, the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB). ASVAB scores are used to determine if you are qualified to enlist in the military and to assign you to an appropriate job in the military.
Unproctored Administration of the ASVAB: PiCAT | ASVAB
The unproctored version of CAT-ASVAB is called PiCAT (short for Pending Internet Computerized Adaptive Test) and can be taken from anywhere that has an internet connection. Unlike the ASVAB, it doesn’t need to be taken at a MEPS or MET site and there are no time limits for the individual subtests.
Understanding ASVAB Scores
AFQT scores are computed using the Standard Scores from four ASVAB subtests: Arithmetic Reasoning (AR), Mathematics Knowledge (MK), Paragraph Comprehension (PC), and Word Knowledge (WK). AFQT scores are reported as percentiles between 1-99.
Preparing for the ASVAB
Find out whether you will be taking the paper and pencil (P&P) ASVAB, or the CAT-ASVAB, as optimal test-taking strategies differ across the two versions. [Note, however, that the test content is the same across both versions.]
