State Highway 12 (SH 12), also known as the Highway of Legends National Scenic Byway, in the U.S. state of Colorado is a mountainous state highway through the Rocky Mountains in southern Colorado. The route travels from La Veta through the mountains to Trinidad.

Kebler Pass is a terrific high-mountain pass connecting Crested Butte with Paonia to the west. It’s a gorgeous seasonal shortcut to Aspen in the Roaring Fork Valley. The pass summits at 10,007 feet above sea level, passing through the Gunnison National Forest.

Technically called Gunnison County Road 12, Kebler Pass is a scenic mountain road that stretches about 30 miles from Highway 133 near Paonia State Park to Crested Butte. The road is only accessible via snowmobile in the winter, but for spring wildflower hunters or fall color seekers, it doesn’t get much better.

For much of the year, there’s only one way to get in and out of Crested Butte, Colorado: Highway 135, which connects the town to Gunnison. But for a few months out of the year, when the snow has melted, you can take the “other” road into town — a easy-to-drive dirt road known as County Road 12, across Kebler Pass.
