2020年10月11日 · As I learn more about numismatics and valuation, the more fascinating I find the phenomena of “Not Intended For Circulation” (NIFC) coinage. At many government mints, it appears NIFC coins are offered in greater abundance than circulating coinage.

2013年5月23日 · NIFC stands for "Not Intended For Circulation" and includes many different types of coins that were not released as generic business strikes for everyday use including proofs and business strikes of coins from series that were essentially discontinued from "normal production", such as the Kennedy Half Dollar.

2017年5月11日 · Proof coins issued in proof sets have deep mirrored finishes, where as business strike (circulation) issues do not. The edges of proofs also have a much sharper, squared-off appearance because the coins were struck under greater pressure.

2020年8月3日 · While the Kennedy Half Dollar is still struck as a legal-tender coin and can be spent as regular money, commercial demand for the coin is almost non-existent. Relatively few vending machines made in recent decades are calibrated to accept half dollars, and even newer cash tills have dropped a designated slot for half dollars.

Any coin issued for collectors, e.g., proof coins or silver proofs, are NIFC. The Kennedy half dollar is no longer issued as a business strike for use in commerce as it used to be.

2024年10月19日 · None of the rolls appear to be solid rolls of this date, but at least half of the coins have been 2023-D in some of them. Are these considered "not issued for circulation" or NIFC? Would that make them worth anything extra if they are? The Fed has ordered half dollars for circulation recently, so some of the 202x are not really NIFC.

2015年3月18日 · I have sold a few NIFC halves here in the past. 2002 is a commonly found date even for the NIFC coins, the more recent the coin the better the market for it as fewer will be in circulation for collectors to find. There is usually a market for 1987 dated coins and impaired proofs from the 1980's onward. Don't expect to get much for them though.

2023年9月26日 · NIFC coins may come from mint sets or proof sets. Such coins are packaged and sold in sets to the collector as NIFC, although sometimes the packages are broken and the coins released into circulation.
