The Colt Automatic Rifle-15 or CAR-15 is a family of M16 rifle –based firearms marketed by Colt in the 1960s and early 1970s. However, the term "CAR-15" is most commonly associated with the Colt Commando (AKA: XM177); these select-fire carbines have ultrashort 10.5-inch (270 mm) and 11.5-inch (290 mm) barrels with over-sized flash suppressors.

The 10 inch barrel Colt XM177 (model 609) was essentially a fielded prototype - and the first Colt CAR-15 SMG version to see limited issue to SEALs, Special Forces and the CIA. Production ran only about one year (1966-67), with possibly less than 3,000 fielded before replacement in 1967 by the longer (and better known) 11.5 inch XM177E2.

The most challenging part of the XM177 history is the profusion of names and nicknames for the actual rifle it represents. They’re all correct, at least in part.

This retro classic carbine is built to the original colt model 629 specifications from the 1960s. The 11.5 inches barrel has an extended flash hider designed to replicate the original moderator that was so iconic for this model.

2024年9月16日 · A Quick XM177 History. The XM177 and XM177E1 both came about in late 1966. They had 10-inch barrels and a 4.5-inch sound moderator. The XM177 was the Air Force issue variant and lacked a forward assist. The XM177E1 was the Army version and was equipped with a tear drop pattern forward assist.

2021年7月8日 · After the testing some of the shortcomings of the Colt SMG were provided back to Colt to address as the Army had taken a liking to idea of a modern SMG. The major issue was the objectionable muzzle flash and noise. Colt quickly fixed this problem with the improved flash/sound suppressor.
