The Coptic alphabet is the script used for writing the Coptic language, the most recent development of Egyptian. The repertoire of glyphs is based on the uncial Greek alphabet, augmented by letters borrowed from the Egyptian Demotic. It was the first alphabetic script used for the Egyptian language.
First we shall study single masculine nouns. These take the definite article pi, meaning “the”, and the indefinite article ou, meaning “a”. This is a word (e.g. “in”, “from”, “to”) often placed before a noun or pronoun to show place, direction source etc. The object separated from a verb by a preposition is called an indirect object.

Read the Coptic words as you read English, except the letters " u, w, x , q, j , ou & ` " & sometimes "a" & "e", as will be shown later. Alpha" a "Pronounce it as the French letter "a", & as "a" in the English word " car ".
Coptic Alphabet These are the basic letters of the Bohairic Coptic alphabet. The block is in Coptic/Greek alphabetic order with capital letters, then lowercase.
The Coptic Language makes use of abbreviations as well, especially with words that are used frequently. An abbreviated word can be recognized by a bar on its top. For example, the words for "Jesus Christ" (pronounced Isoos Pi'ekhrestos in Coptic) are abbreviated as shown below (see also the Copt-Net Logo on top of this Newsletter):
